As part of our 'Collections 2026' launch, Westley Richards have introduced a radical departure from our traditional cottons and linens by collaborating with Meindl to create this unique deerskin suede version of the famous Selous Safari Jacket.
The new jacket retains all the design features of the traditional Selous, but the selection of premium deer-skin suede transforms it into a luxuriant mid-season jacket, cut with sufficient room for a sweater to be worn underneath, or to allow air to circulate when worn with a shirt in warmer weather.
The suede in question is what Meindl refers to as ‘chamois tanned’ and it comes from wild red deer hunted in the European Alps. It is incredibly soft and supple; much lighter weight than it appears and it is supremely comfortable, while bringing the natural hardwearing characteristics of animal hide.
The fabric half-lining adds structure and helps ensure the suede sits nicely on the shoulders and drapes perfectly. Once on, this jacket is so light and soft that it blends with your body-shape and your movements so as to feel almost a part of your skin. You almost forget you are wearing a jacket.
In common with our regular fabric Selous Safari Jacket, the four outside pockets are bellowed and flap fastened. The cuffs feature two working buttons and the front closure is by means of five of the same horn buttons.
There are two additional internal pockets and a slanted, zipped, front pocket for valuables. The belt is fully functional and adds an additional, or alternative, means of closure. The overall silhouette is classic safari. The style has endured for a century or more and remains a best seller.
