description
A very good J & W. Tolley, double 8-bore, hammer gun.
36” steel barrels by Thomas Bland & Sons, the action with through lumps and rebounding back-locks engraved with scrolls and vignettes of wildfowl in natural settings.
The metalwork retains a high percentage of original finish, screw and pin slots line-up correctly and are in good condition. Wood-to-metal and metal-to-metal fit remains tight throughout.
Pistol-grip stock with 14 ¾” to centre, over a perished Silver’s pad and spacer. Steel grip cap and blued guard.
The top-lever operates Tolley 1877 patent ‘Screw Grip’ third bite and double Purdey under-bolt. Barrels are on-face and jointing appears good.
Barrels are of dovetail lump construction, Birmingham (post 1925) nitro proof for 3 ¼ Tons and 2oz shot.
Forend and hand both retain deep chequer and are free from cracks.
Overall, a remarkably original gun with new barrels in very good mechanical and cosmetic order.
