Holland & Holland .375 Flanged 2 1/2" Royal Hammerless

Serial Number 17670

SOLD

description

Holland & Holland .375 Flanged 2 1/2" 'The Royal Hammerless Double Rifle made around 1900. Based on Holland's patented back-action sidelock with a strap over comb and original tang mounted flip-up peep sight, two triggers, bolted manual safety, third fastener, disk set strikers, and gold lined cocking indicators.

The action body is beautifully shaped and proportioned with a double beaded edges that are slightly rounded. Expertly cut 'Royal' engraving with the Maker's name arching in the middle of each lock plate and 'The Royal Hammerless' engraved on the bottom of the action.

Guard bow extends to the trap grip cap and the serial number is inlayed in gold. The 26" barrels have a dovetail lump and Holland's and rib extension. Nicely filed quarter rib is stippled and has fitted with three folding leaves (100, 200, 300 yds) and an equally well executed front sight with the original removable sight protector. The Maker's name and the "98 New Bond Street" address are engraved on top of the right barrel and 'Winner of all the Field Rifle Trials, London' engraved on the top of the left barrel.

Original stock has a 14 3/4" LOP over a serrated horn butt and have a right-hand traditional English cheekpiece. The full pistol grip has a trap door grip cap. The stock oval is engraved: W.R.D.

Original sling swivels mounted to the bottom rib of the barrels and just behind the stock oval on the toe line.

Complete in a lightweight leather flat case with a reprint Maker's trade label and charge card.

Action retains probably 80% of original color hardening and the retain most of, what appears to be, the original black. The guard bow has been re-blacked, assuming it was done at the same time the gold was inlaid in the serial number. Bores and chambers remain very good to excellent.

Overall, an excellent example of a late 19th - early 20th century Holland Royal double rifle in a cartridge that is very pleasant to shoot and a viable option for lots of North America's big game.
