description
A Westley Richards double rifle, originally sold in 1920 as a Best Quality Hand Detachable rifle in .318 Express with a Patent One Trigger and Ejectors. In 1970, the rifle was re-barreled by Westley Richards & Co. to a .458 Win. Mag., as was common practice in those days. Then, in 1996, the rifle was returned to Westley Richards for a full overhaul.
Hand Detachable Lock action has a hinged cover plate, and the original removable strikers, bolted safety and Model “C” Doll’s Head rib extension and Snap Lever work but was re-fitted with two triggers. The action is engraved in the original House small scroll engraving with the Maker’s name in flowing banners on each side of the and a one-horned Indian Rhino on the trigger bow. The action shows traces of what was probably a re-color and the furniture has been re-blacked.
The 24” Chopper lump barrels were re-rifled, re-chambered and proved in Birmingham to .470 NE. The barrels feature a Westley Richards pattern quarter rib with a standing Express sight and two folding leaves (100, 200, 300 yds) and Westley’s patent combination foresight with folding hood and flip-up moon sight.
The stock is of modern dimensions and with traditional drop points, a full pistol grip and beavertail forend with a Deeley latch, all checkered in a traditional point pattern. The stock uses the original trap grip, is fitted with modern sling swivels, has a blank stock shield and a 14 5/16” LOP over a 1” leather covered pad.
The gun is furnished in an O&L case and canvas cover by Huey of Kansas City, MO. The case has a red baize interior with a properly addressed Maker's trade label.
Restoration work was an integral part of Westley Richards & Co.'s business model After the second World War. The company remained the industry leader in all manners of restoring guns and rifles until the first part of the 21st Century, when production of new guns again became the focus of the firm. This rifle was expertly reconstructed during this time period and given a new lease on life by making it a very viable option as a rifle for dangerous game.
