A Westley Richards .500 Hand Detachable Lock Double

We don't often have any readily available, modern manufacture double rifles for sale in our used guns department, we had a couple of .470 rifles as we went into the shows in January but these promptly sold.

This .500 rifle which is a few safari's old and very lightly used, is just passing through the workshop now, getting a service and polish up before being put up for sale.

With 24 inch barrels, 14 3/4" length of pull over leather pad, extra locks and cased it is a great opportunity for anyone who doesn't want to wait the years it takes for a new rifle to be built.

    Morning Everyone,
Simon as was my luck, someone out there is about to share the same joy I did when I received my new Double Rifle without waiting the necessary time it takes to build one...I got lucky also!!!! Congratulation to whoever ends up with this beautiful work of art. That may be the finest Cape Buffalo I have ever seen engraved on a gun. I thought I saw his tail swish!! Please pass this onto the engraver for me Sir. I would also like to know the name of the Artist that did this incredible work if you would.

    In Christ
    Vance,

A fine looking piece indeed, if only! I do have a query, the drop plate beneath the action, am I right in thinking it is blued as opposed to case hardened like the action block itself? I am no expert, but am interested to know why it looks different.

The drop plate is indeed blued traditionally, in same manner as trigger guard and top lever. We do occasionally case colour them and if a coin finish we case colour the whole lot and brush off. It depends very much on the engraving how the finish is made.

When the grass is green and heavy dark clouds come in, the grass seems to get greener due to the chlorophyll's reaction to the ultra-violet light. The buffalo look blue to me. Thus, I will remember this vignette as, "The Indigo Blue Bulino Bull."

Do dpoplocks have intercepting sears? Doesn't seem like they do. If not, isn't that a problem with such a calibre?

    • Simon Clode on January 10, 2016 at 5:11 am

I love ignorant questions by the drones of the internet. Do you not think if this was a problem we would not have fixed it? Igor, you who hide behind a fake email address, get real, ask sensible questions.

      • Igor on January 13, 2016 at 7:52 pm

Wow, that's a hell of an answer. Off course, if you do not make it what need of it could there be, right? It just those idiots all of the best gunmakers perform two sears just for nothing. Why not if you pay a hundred thousand anyway, I agree.
What a relief the Earth still have some sensible people like you, Simon.

Just for information, what makes email authentic these days if mine is fake?
