Each region developed its own designs, often inspired by the local terrain. These patterns naturally blend-in to their surroundings, effectively acting as camouflage. Tweed absorbs moisture when it rains and the fibres expand, tightening the fabric to form a barrier, which keeps the wearer surprisingly dry. Once the rain stops, tweed naturally dries quickly and remains warm throughout the cycle.
Tweed even retains its shape and structure during periods of intense activity through alternating wet and dry conditions, with a unique ability to retain its qualities of style and formality in the harshest of environments. Tweed really is the oldest and the best of the sporting fabrics now available. No wonder it is as popular with today’s sportsmen as it was a century ago.

Traditional tweed shooting garments have developed over two centuries and have taken forms indicative of their specialist nature, some features of which have passed into the wider fashion industry and become standard even outside of their original intent. For example, the double vent at the back of many a business suit jacket originated with the hacking jacket, to sit better when a rider was astride a horse.

The shooting coat, also known as the covert coat, is the jack-of all trades in the shooting field; loose enough to wear over a light or heavy sweater depending on the weather and with roomy shoulders, often featuring a Raglan cut to allow easy movement and better repel rainwater.
Big, lined cartridge pockets, with flaps, provide ample dry stowage for ammunition, easy access to it and perfect placement for reaching–in. Side pockets allow cold hands to find a warm hideaway with gun broken over the forearm, while walking in a storm.
A storm collar, storm cuffs and chunky zips and buttons operate easily with cold fingers and keep out the worst of winter. These big overcoats are cut short enough to facilitate long walks but provide enough cover to keep hips and backside dry in a storm. The covert coat often becomes the go-to garment for a dog walk on a frosty morning, as well as the obvious choice for a day on the pheasants.

The more formal option for a shooting day, which doubles up as a sports jacket. For proper shooting sports, a special back profile is used, which sits perfectly flat but allows full shoulder expansion when wielding a gun. The jacket also features a concealed storm collar for those rough weather occasions on the moor.

The shooting vest is ideal for sport on a dry day, when worn over a check shirt on the grouse moor, or for walking-up October partridges. It is also perfect for summer clay shoots.
Team it with a chunky-knit or a fleece and it adapts to colder weather. The true beauty of the shooting vest is freedom of movement; allowing for a protective garment with a fitted body yet imposing no arm movement restriction at all. The same big pockets as the covert coat provide instant access to a couple of boxes of cartridges, if needed.

Tweed breeks are knee-length trousers worn with long, woolen socks. This system prevents snagging and moisture-wicking in the field and is the best way of staying mobile, comfortable and dry while shooting. Our breeks are fully lined for comfort and feature ample pockets, robust zips and secure buckles. Belt loops provide that ultimate security needed for hiking over cover without the worry of slippage.
For the 2025-6 season, Westley Richards is offering a range of three beautiful tweeds in a variety of garment types to cover all eventualities. Should you decide on a full matching set or take a mix and match approach (it is entirely normal and appropriate to mix shooting tweeds) your shooting needs are all met here.

The Rannoch was the favoured tweed of our Managing Director, who selected it for grouse shooting, given its heather-pink over-check and moor-blending hues. It has retained enduring popularity and has been listed for the new season once more. The Rannoch range includes a covert coat and a semi-Norfolk shooting jacket with action back and all the features customers have come to expect from Westley Richards.
Team this with our Rannoch breeks for a smart look on the peg all season long or opt for a Rannoch shooting waistcoat, with olive Alcantara trim, horn, Westley Richards branded buttons and a detachable recoil pad for either shoulder. A long trouser option is included, making the jacket and trouser set an impressive country weekend suit or simply to extend the life of the jacket into post-sport attire outside of the shoot room.

Harpton is our new tweed for 2025, first shown in our promotional films and photographs for the latest catalogue. On the grouse moor on the Harpton Estate, overlooking stunning Welsh countryside near Presteigne, it blended perfectly with heather and the backdrop of fields, hills and forestry.
The Harpton range is a lightweight, tight weave, English tweed incorporating a shooting vest, both breeks and trousers, and our classic covert coat. Tailored to perfection in our tried-and-tested designs, the Harpton tweeds, with their midnight blue alcantara trim, which beautifully picks-up the dark blue over-check, is a stylishly different option from the classic greens so often seen in a shooting line.

The Westley Richards House Tweed is a classic, solid green, which only shows the complexity of its make-up at close range. Teflon coated for extra durability and water resistance, it holds its shape beautifully and looks sharp and formal in even the most challenging of weather conditions.
Available in the more formal options of a three-button shooting jacket, with bellows pockets and action back, a shooting waistcoat and both breeks and long trousers, the House Tweed is the smart option for that top-end shoot where taking a notch-up in your presentation is sensible.

Westley Richards offers tweed caps in three styles. The Bond Cap is a flat cap with a distinct peak, the Kinloch Cap is a classic flat cap with a traditional wedge profile and the Redford Cap is a true seven-panel, button-top, baker-boy style with a face-framing peak. Supplies fluctuate but at least one or two styles are normally available in each of our tweed options every season.
