We are proud to be based in Birmingham; England’s second city and the cradle of the country’s manufacturing might for most of the 19th century. ‘Made in Birmingham’ was once a guarantee of quality reassuring to several generations of overseas colonists and military men far from home and seeking durable goods.
Today, the descendents of the craftsmen and women who forged that reputation for Birmingham’s industries, and maintained it for over a century, are employed reinvigorating the city’s tradition of excellence. Westley Richards was founded upon the quest to build the ‘best’ gun. The term ‘best’ in the gun trade refers a gun made by the most skilled workers, to the optimal design, using the finest materials available with no thought given to either time or cost of manufacture.
The result is the best version of its type that can be made. As with our guns, so it is with our bags and luggage. The concept delivers unrivalled results, which speak for themselves. The five Westley Richards collections are complemented by special editions, which offer, for a limited time, variations on the classic models in rare or unusual fabrics, hides or finishes.
For Summer 2026, the Bishop Bag and the Explora Rucksack are both available in elegant, elephant-grey suede. Before releasing this edition, a prototype was trialed for twelve months to test it for wear, patina and colour-fastness when subjected to hard daily use. It has worn superbly and thoroughly deserves its current position of prominence.
The word ‘balance’ describes these bags perfectly. The close-grained suede is thick without being stiff, supple without being shapeless. The brass hardware is unusually well-shaped and finished. No rough edges, no casting seams, neither crudely heavy nor impractically flimsy. The dark tan leather edging, straps and reinforcement panels are superbly tactile and look better with age and use, weathering gracefully as only the finest natural materials can.
These bags are not only unique to Westley Richards and representative of an appreciation of design and quality few can claim, they are genuinely multi-generational purchases, which will become treasured future classics.
