The New Loden Shooting Collection at Palé Hall

For the coming game season, Westley Richards introduces its inaugural Loden Shooting Collection, tailored in England from cloth woven by the renowned Leichtfried Mill in Austria. Made from a luxurious blend of 80% pure new wool and 20% alpaca, the fabric offers natural water repellency, warmth, durability and a notably rich handle. Tried and tested over recent seasons by our Managing Director, the cloth has already proved its value in the field. Presented in an elegant monochrome palette, the range combines sporting tradition with a contemporary edge.

Loden is not a traditional British fabric. More commonly associated with European hunting dress, it has long been appreciated by customers familiar with our partner brands, Habsburg and Maximilian. In adapting it to a more British style of tailoring, Westley Richards has created something distinctive: a collection that feels at once rooted in the traditions of the field and entirely relevant to the modern sportsman.

The new Loden Shooting Collection consists of two styles of gilet, or shooting vest, as well as breeks and trousers. Hard-wearing, breathable and remarkably resilient, the cloth has the unusual ability to retain its shape and finish through repeated wear. It is precisely this balance of practicality and refinement that gives the collection its appeal.

Little more than two hours from Westley Richards’ factory and flagship showroom on Pritchett Street, Palé Hall proved a fitting setting in which to photograph the range. Beautifully renovated and now established as one of Britain's leading country house hotels, it has established itself as a premier shooting destination, pairing five-star hospitality with a genuine understanding of country life and the game season.

Among those joining us for the shoot was Luke Selby, Chef Partner at Palé Hall and a keen sporting shot. His presence alongside our Managing Director, Anthony Alborough-Tregear, brought further authenticity to the day. Formerly Executive Head Chef at the two-Michelin-star Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons, Luke represents a new generation of countryside-based talent whose work combines technical excellence with a deep respect for tradition. Those values feel entirely at home alongside the new Loden collection.

During the shoot, the Welsh weather proved characteristically unpredictable, providing the ideal conditions in which to put the collection to the test. In the field, the collection demonstrated its ease, resilience and comfort; later, back at the estate, its more refined qualities became equally apparent. This is clothing designed not only for the shooting line, but for the wider rhythm of a day in the field.

Alongside the Loden pieces, Westley Richards also photographed the latest addition to the Harpton Tweed range: a traditional shooting jacket to complement the existing shooting vest, breeks, trousers and caps. Bold and contemporary, Harpton offers a strong visual contrast to Loden while sharing the same emphasis on utility, movement and handsome design.

At Palé Hall, the relationship between these two new collections became especially clear. Both reflect the enduring appeal of traditional craft, interpreted with a more modern elegance. In that sense, the setting, the people and the clothes all felt naturally aligned.
