James Purdey & Sons .600 Nitro Express Double Rifle

£ POA

An exceptionally rare James Purdey & Sons .600 Nitro Express double rifle, No. 29151, featuring African game-scene engraving by K. C. Hunt.

Ordered in 1994 and recently released from a private collection, this example combines the maker’s distinctive styling with the presence of a traditional English heavy double rifle.

Built on the Purdey-Beesley self-opening sidelock action, it is fitted with 24-inch chopper-lump barrels, express sights and Purdey’s characteristic two-piece “clamshell” foresight protector. The figured walnut stock incorporates a shadow-line cheekpiece, gold oval and a red Silvers recoil pad, with a length of pull of 14½ inches to centre. Overall weight is 14 lb 15 oz.

Hunt’s engraving brings particular distinction to the rifle. Finely executed African game scenes are framed by classic rose-and-scroll work, with the coin-finished action allowing the detail to stand out. Gold-inlaid furniture provides a complementary finish.

The inscription on the action flats identifies No. 29151 as the ninth .600 Nitro Express double rifle produced by Purdey. A distinctive example of Best English gunmaking, combining an uncommon chambering with the work of a celebrated engraver.
