DAVID MCKAY BROWN GUNS AT WESTLEY RICHARDS.

David McKay Brown has, in my opinion, been the most successful independent gunmaker in modern times. From his workshops north of Glasgow, far away from all the politics of gunmaking down south in England, David has consistently, year after year, produced a superb Over and Under and Side by Side game gun based on a classic Scottish round body, trigger plate action. The McKay gun is a gun to be used, David is not one of the small makers making a handful of guns which are never shot or used in the field, these are not ego guns, they are sporting guns.

McKay Brown, Gunmaker

David runs his business from the bench, is rarely seen at any of the shows now ( a waste of time) which is a shame, he was always the life and soul of the parties. He spends his time now making guns with his small team to satisfy the prolific demand and when the Grouse season starts he takes a break and starts using them. A fiercely independent maker in total control of every aspect of his gunmaking but also generous with his advice on ways he has found to do things better and make the business work.

These are the first McKay Brown guns we have had for sale at Westley Richards and if I can't sell them I will no doubt be putting in a call to Glasgow!

those are beauties, but they are all boxlocks, does he make sidelocks?

    • Simon Clode on July 13, 2014 at 4:53 pm

No he only makes the round action gun, traditional Scottish style!

Boxlocks??? Those are trigger-plate guns in the round-bar action, not "boxlocks". They have intercepting safety sears and are made to the closest tolerances, have the best walnut available, and in short are easily the equal of anything with sidelocks coming out of London's "best" maker premises - bar none.

David's guns are always made to shoot...no closet queens from 32, Hamilton Road.

I have owned two O/Us, and a SxS, later sold - but all shot in all kinds of Scottish weather. That's what they were made for.

If you are truly interested in a McKay Brown, you should read up on the entire life line of Dickson - MacNaughton - Brown trigger plate lock guns [they are no more boxlocks than your Red Ryder BB Gun], so you can both come to understand and appreciate what it is you are looking at.

I am truly amazed by the essence of these guns which is readily apparent even in this electronic medium. I can only fantasize of one day owning such a sultry piece - and yes, I would use it on grouse/woodcock (in fair weather).

David's (I've known him since 1997, have visited his shop a number of times, bought guns from him, and shot with him - hence my familiarity in referring to him as David.) guns, as explained by Mr. Clode above, are trigger plate lock guns, not boxlocks or sidelocks. This is an exclusively basic Scottish gun design going back perhaps 130 years or so, with major improvements from McKay Brown. DMB developed the first practical O/U trigger plate gun, and is the only Scottish manufacturer completely producing these guns in his own shop.. Unless one wishes simply to retain his guns' pristine beauty as they have left his shop, one shoots them in every kind of weather. Our partridge shoot, with David, this past September, 2016, is the only time I've shot his guns that we were not in either rain or snow at some point.. Not a problem. If you can acquire one, for heaven's sake, put it to the use for which it was built - shooting! Posted from the USA.
