The Harpton Lightweight Tweed Launches For The Glorious Twelfth

In the lead up to the eagerly anticipated Glorious Twelfth, Westley Richards premiers its new lightweight tweed, The Harpton. Inspired by early season shoots in the British Isles, and by our international patrons sporting tweed ensembles on driven days in the Americas, the company is delighted to launch this superb lighter weight tweed from the Lovat Mill in Scotland.

Named after the location of this year’s photoshoot at the Harpton Estate, situated on its warm grouse moor in the shadow of the Black Mountains, this idyllic location in Wales, showcased the new collection at it’s very best alongside our popular House and Rannoch sporting tweeds.

While having the distinction of being sufficiently light to wear on a hot, late-summer grouse moor or for tackling partridges amidst early autumn stubbles, the Harpton’s tight weave, smooth drape and excellent shape retention is admirably weatherproof and protective against showers, wind and abrasion.

From a few yards, the blended colours look nicely camouflaged among tree bark and undergrowth, while up-close the tweed’s complexity reveals itself to be a multi-coloured stripe comprising dark blues, mustard and sage, over a moss-green backdrop, with a lateral check formed by carmine red, dark blue and mustard.

As with all Westley Richards sporting tweed ranges, every garment is produced by specialist tailors, here in England.

Harpton Shooting Coat

A fresh version of our proven design, with all the features for which our classic covert coat is rightly loved, presented in the new lightweight Harpton Tweed. Don’t be fooled by the lightness, although not bulky, this is a fully weather-beating fabric with excellent wind stopping properties and tweed’s unique ability to keep out the wet and dry quickly as soon as the wind picks up or the sun comes out. Nothing beats it.

Like the Harpton Shooting Waistcoat, the covert coat is lined in blue satin and boasts real horn buttons and midnight blue Alcantara trim. Big bellows pockets make for easy-loading and raglan sleeves help repel the rain, while providing a full range of easy movement. Hand-warming side pockets are a comforting necessity before the action starts.

These covert coats have become an essential part of every shooting wardrobe and prove their worth season after season. When the rain, wind or snow really decide to make themselves felt, this is the coat that will negate their impact and allow you to carry on shooting in comfort.

Harpton Shooting Waistcoat

Trimmed with midnight-blue Alcantara, which extends to the shoulder patches, and adorned with Westley Richards branded, real horn buttons, including the tabs for the 1 ½” half-belt waist adjustment, this is the perfect summer option, teamed with a polo shirt for simulated clay days or a Tattersall check for the real thing.

Lined in hard-wearing, classy shimmering-blue satin cloth, the shoulder facings house pockets for a removable shooting patch to mitigate recoil. Lie-flat, lined bellows pockets are ideally placed for loading and each comfortably holds 25 cartridges. A zipped internal pocket for phone or wallet is a final, practical addition to this stylish and beautifully made all-season shooting waistcoat.

Harpton Tweed Shooting Breeks and Trousers

Breeks have long been favoured in the field for their comfort and practicality. The knee-length cut prevents moisture wicking upwards and ensures you stay dry and warm.  Shooting socks, with either leather boots or Wellingtons make up the ensemble.

Some sportsmen prefer to wear trousers for socializing after the shooting has finished and we offer Harpton tweeds in both options. Of late, it has become fashionable in some quarters to wear tweed trousers in the field with Wellingtons and simply change into brogues for the meal or drinks in the pub after shooting. We leave the choice to you.

The new Harpton Tweed collection bring a contemporary and distinctive sophistication to the traditional shooting outfit and offer all-season flexibility, in a package unlike any other. This will be the on-trend look for the 2025/6 season. Only from Westley Richards. Discover the range here.
