Charles Boswell .303 Single Shot Rifle

Serial Number 15008

Stunning Charles Boswell .303 Best Quality Hammerless Ejector Single Shot rifle. Completed around 1905, the rifle features a 28" octagon barrel with hand filed matted rib, ramp foresight, 1 standing/6 folding leaves (100 to 700 yds) rear sights and firm's 26 Strand St. address engraved at the breech.

Top-Lever, hammerless, ejector, barrel-cocking (as based on the A&D principal)  single shot with a nicely shaped action that is slightly bolsterd with leaf shaped fences. Action also has a disk set striker and an automatic safety with "SAFE" in gold.

The rifle is superbly engraved with game scenes featuring a selection of plains game that are unmistakably of the South African variety such as Eland, Black Wildebeest, Blesbok/Bontebok, springbok, reedbuck and klipspringer. The subjects of these game scenes, and the style in which they are portrayed, are strikingly similar to the watercolors of Wild Southern African Game by Major Sir William Cornwallis Harris and no doubt influenced by this early 19th century British officer's art work. Each scene is surrounded by full coverage, intricate traditional scroll. The name "C. Boswell" gently rolls around the hinge pin on both sides of the action and the leaf shaped bolsters at the fences are engraved with bold acanthus scroll. The side flats at the breech end of the barrel are also engraved in a matching traditional English scroll.

A 14 1/4", including a 1 1/4" wooden extension, pistol grip stock with solid steel grip cap, RH cheekpiece, blank stock oval and Silvers recoil pad. A dainty forend with a horn tip and a screw-grip lever.

The rifle weighs 7 lbs. 5 oz.

The rifle's metal remains untouched showing strong traces of case colors on the action body and bold colors on the water table and grip cap.

The barrel has Metford riffling and it remains excellent. Proofed in London (ca. 1904 to 1925) for ".303 38 grs Rifleite".

A rare rifle on so many levels displaying engraving that is incredibly well executed and in a very useful caliber, this would be a worthy addition to any gunroom.
